Purposes of Processing
Our website enables you to plan cycling routes of your choice across the boundaries of the participating federal states. Via the feedback form you can contact us with questions of a technical and/or substantive nature. You can also use our functional mailbox or contact us by telephone or fax.
Data processed when visiting our website
Only the following non-personal data is collected and processed:
- Name or URL of the data accessed,
- Date and time of access,
- Volume of data transferred,
- Message indicating whether the retrieval was successful,
- Operating system, browser type and browser version, and
- Your anonymised IP address.
This requires the use of cookies. These are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. We only use technically necessary cookies. These do not collect any personal or personally identifiable data. They are used exclusively to
- provide our website to you in good quality,
- manage system load (load balancing),
- defend against IT attacks,
- fix IT errors (e.g. browser adjustments where necessary) and
- anonymously evaluate website usage in order to continuously improve the usability and quality of our online offering.
Technical cookies are indispensable for this purpose. We do not use any other cookies, in particular no tracking cookies or other tools that allow conclusions to be drawn about your identity. You can completely prevent cookie tracking in your browser, including technically necessary cookies. However, this may mean that you cannot use our homepage optimally.
No processing of personal or personally identifiable data when using the Route Planner
When you use the cycling route planner embedded on this website, you remain completely anonymous. Neither BALM nor third parties can determine which routes you have viewed or selected. BALM cannot do so because your IP address is immediately anonymised (see above under "Data processed when visiting our website"); third parties cannot do so because BALM does not pass any data on to third parties, including your IP address. The embedding of third-party maps is technically designed so that access takes place via a separate interface that precludes the traceability of route planning to map users.
Data processed when using the feedback form
This requires the collection of your name and email address. We use this data exclusively to answer your question(s). The email generated when you use the feedback form is sent to us via https encryption.
Mail to our functional mailbox or fax:
Data or information you send us via a functional mailbox or by fax is also used only to process your request. We generally respond to your (generally unencrypted) email to a functional mailbox by unencrypted email as well, unless you explicitly ask us in your email to use a different means for our reply (e.g. by letter or telephone). If you wish to use DE-Mail, please contact poststelle@balm.bund.de beforehand, who will open this secure access route for you.
Contact by telephone
Data or information you provide in a telephone call will only be stored if you expressly request this for the further processing of your request and only to the extent necessary. We use your data only to process your request.
Duration of storage
The cookie with which you grant your general consent to the use of cookies is stored for 1 year, unless you delete this cookie yourself in the browser of your device. This cookie storage is for purely service reasons, so that you do not have to give your consent to cookies again on further visits to our website. All other cookies are mere session cookies, i.e. they are automatically deleted when you log off our website again. The above-mentioned anonymous data collected via session cookies during your visit to our website is immediately and irrevocably deleted as soon as it is no longer needed for the aforementioned purposes.
The data you send us when using the feedback form is deleted automatically on a regular basis. The deletion period is based on the average processing times for feedback requests.
Data sent to us by email, fax or telephone is deleted in compliance with data protection law and in accordance with the Registry Guideline of the Federal Ministry of the Interior as soon as it is no longer needed to process your request.
Legal basis
Article 6(1)(a) and (e) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation in conjunction with § 3 of the Federal Data Protection Act and the Federal-State Administrative Agreement on Digitalisation in Cycling, as well as Articles 24, 28 and 32 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
Data recipients
Your data is not passed on to third parties, neither the data collected when you visit the website nor the data you have voluntarily provided to us via the above-mentioned channels.
Links to external providers
If you click on a link to an external site on our website, you are leaving the pages of our website. BALM is then not responsible for the content, services and products offered on the linked website, nor for data protection or technical security there.
Our technical service provider:

The connection between your device and our website is https-encrypted (TSL 1.2 with PFS = Perfect Forward Secrecy), so that this communication, including the use of the feedback form (but not emails sent via an email programme to one of our functional mailboxes), is secured against access by unauthorised third parties. If you wish to use DE-Mail, please contact poststelle@balm.bund.de beforehand, who will open this secure access route for you.
Your data protection rights
You have the right to information and, where applicable, correction, restriction of storage or deletion, restriction of processing, data portability, objection and withdrawal of your consent under Articles 12 and 15 ff. GDPR. Further details, in particular regarding your rights, can be found here: (link to the "Data Protection Information of BALM in accordance with EU GDPR and BDSG-neu" at www.balm.bund.de).
